At first Claire’s youthful exuberance comes across as annoying and over the top, until you realize that is how her character is supposed to be. Her counterpart, Luke (Pat Healy) appears to be in a similar state, however he is much older than Claire.
#THE INNKEEPERS RATED MOVIE#
We never discover how old she is supposed to be but we can infer from the movie she is supposed to be a lot older than she acts. Sara Paxton’s character, Claire, is clearly very immature. This gives plenty of time to get to know the two protagonists and their relationship with each other and the hotel.
Apart from the two leads there are only 5 other real characters in the movie. One of the things that is both an advantage and disadvantage to the film is the small cast. Obviously, the more the two look for hauntings, the more weird things begin to happen around them. During their weekend they spend their time trying to find evidence of spiritual activity in an attempt to try and reignite interest in the hotel. The Innkeepers stars Sara Paxton and Pat Healy as the last two employees at the Yankee Pedlar Inn on its final weekend before closing. Over the weekend I was able to enjoy 2011’s sleeper hit, The Innkeepers, which is still surprisingly unique given the amount of time since the film’s release. Interestingly, each film deals with family in the face of evil. Last year and the year before that gave us Goodnight Mommy and The Babadook. Earlier this year we were graced with The Witch an uncomfortable tale about a puritan family moving into the new England wilderness in the 1630’s. Too bad it is not enough to overcome just how mundane this film is as a whole. It’s always interesting to see what each year brings to the horror genre.
They were totally passive participants for the most part.Ī dead, naked old man covered in blood may be one of the scariest images in the history of horror films.įinal Verdict: Nothing much happens in this movie for over an hour but when director Ti West does remember that he is making a scary movie he creates an almost pitch perfect bit of ghostly horror cinema.
Its like watching CLERKS if it was set in a dumpy hotel but was devoid of nearly all humor and the presence of Jay and Silent Bob.Īlso the ghostly apparitions in this movie didn’t actually do anything but appear to people. Nothing of note happens, the two main characters behave like total spastic slackers and the movie moves at a dead snail’s pace. For over an hour this movie is absolutely stagnant. Kelly McGillis as a has-been actress turned medium and veteran character actor George Riddle as an old man looking to relive his honeymoon provide a few scenes of interest in the lead up to the the movie’s big turn. This 20 or so minutes of legit horror movie almost makes it worth sitting through all that came before. The suspense level jumps up a million percent and the tension becomes very palpable. The moment when this movie makes a sharp pivot into genuine ghost horror is not only a welcome occasion but also very well done. Synopsis: On the last weekend before the Yankee Pedlar Inn closes its doors forever, two of the inn’s employees (and amateur ghost hunters!) are determined to prove that the legend of the haunted hotel is definitely real to disastrous results. Starring: Sara Paxton, Pat Healy, Kelly McGillis and George Riddle Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 76% (Critics) / 47% (Audience)
